How VIC Petrol Prices Moved Day by Day

The week started gently enough. Metro U91 opened at 155.5 c/L on Monday 29 June and barely moved through Tuesday and Wednesday. Then it accelerated. By Thursday 3 July prices had climbed to 162.0 c/L, and by Sunday 5 July they'd reached 168.0 c/L, a rise of more than 12 cents across the week.

Rural drivers felt the same upward pressure, though slightly softened. Regional areas opened at 165.7 c/L and closed the week at 175.3 c/L. That's a meaningful difference in weekly experience: if you're filling a 60-litre tank in the country, you're paying roughly $6 more than your metro counterparts just for the privilege of living outside the city.

Cheapest and Priciest Stations in VIC This Week

The spread between the cheapest and most expensive metro stations this week is frankly staggering. The cheapest recorded metro price was 132.9 c/L and the most expensive was 400.0 c/L. That's a gap of over 267 cents per litre at different stations within the same metro area. Shopping around isn't just a tip, it's almost a financial obligation.

Brand averages reinforce this. For metro U91, Costco averaged 145.5 c/L across its 3 stations, and Apco came in at 152.3 c/L. At the other end, Caltex averaged 169.7 c/L across 15 stations. That's a 24.2c gap between the cheapest and priciest brands — on a 60-litre fill, you're looking at a difference of over $14 depending on where you pull in.

Best Day to Fill Up Last Week

Last Tuesday, 30 June, was the cheapest day of the week to fill up, with metro U91 touching 155.0 c/L. Prices climbed from there without looking back, so anyone who topped up early in the week caught the best conditions on offer.

VIC Metro Petrol Price Forecast: What's Coming

The short-term outlook for metro Melbourne isn't particularly cheery. The forecast has U91 rising to 169.0 c/L on Monday 6 July (66% confidence), nudging to 169.9 c/L on Tuesday (60% confidence), and reaching 170.7 c/L by Wednesday 8 July (55% confidence). That's up roughly 10 cents from where metro prices sat at the start of last week. These forecasts apply to metro areas only.

How to Save on Fuel in VIC Right Now

Diesel drivers are in the best position right now. A 2.5c fall in metro and a 2.9c fall in rural areas makes this a decent week for utes and vans to fill up before any reversal. Petrol drivers face the opposite pressure, with the forecast pointing higher through at least mid-week.

One thing worth keeping in mind: supply for a couple of fuel types is a little tighter than usual. U91 is currently out of stock at 29 metro stations (up from 26 last week) and diesel is dry at 47 stations (up from 46). Nothing alarming, but worth checking live availability before you drive across town chasing a cheap price.

With prices heading upward and the forecast confirming the trend, VIC drivers who can fill up today are better placed than those who wait until midweek.
