Where our prices come from

Petrol Smart reads each market’s official fuel price feed directly. Every price records where it came from and when it was last seen, and this page lists every feed we read, how often we read it, and who we credit for it.

Victoria works differently

The one state where your report can beat the official feed.

Victoria has an official government feed and we read it on the same interval as the other open-data states. The difference is timing: the official data runs about a day behind what is on the board. So Victoria is the one state where a fresh user report overrides the official price, and where reporting a price you have just seen genuinely helps whoever fills up next.

Western Australia publishes tomorrow

A fact, not a forecast.

Western Australian retailers lock in a price a day ahead under the FuelWatch scheme, so tomorrow’s price is published rather than predicted. It appears on Western Australian station pages beneath today’s price, labelled as tomorrow’s published price. No other Australian market publishes one.

Australia

Reporting a price

Available in Victoria today.

Because the Victorian feed runs behind, anyone in Victoria can report a price they have just seen and it takes priority over the official number. Reporting is not offered anywhere else: not in the other Australian states, where the official feed is current within its reading interval, and not in the United Kingdom, where every price comes from Fuel Finder. Reported prices are labelled as community reports wherever they appear, so they are never mixed with official data.

United Kingdom

UK Fuel Finder

The government-backed scheme UK retailers publish their prices to.

Fuel Finder is the scheme through which fuel retailers in the United Kingdom report their prices for public use, and it publishes them through the UK Fuel Finder public API(opens in a new tab). Petrol Smart reads that API through the day and labels every price that comes from it.

User price reports are not accepted at United Kingdom forecourts — reporting is offered in Victoria only — so every UK price Petrol Smart shows comes from Fuel Finder.

Spotted a price or forecourt detail that is wrong? Report it to gov.uk(opens in a new tab) — corrections made at UK Fuel Finder reach every service that reads it, including Petrol Smart.

FAQ

Common questions

How often do prices update?
Most Australian state feeds are read every 15 minutes. New South Wales, the ACT and Tasmania share the FuelCheck service and are read every 30 minutes. State averages recompute on the same cadence.
Why is a price different from the pump?
Feeds are published by retailers and regulators on their own schedule, and prices change in between. Victoria runs about a day behind, which is why user reports take priority there.
Where does Tasmania’s data come from?
Tasmanian fuel price data arrives through the New South Wales FuelCheck service, which is why the two share a reading interval.
What about suburb and postcode search?
That runs on OpenStreetMap data, which we credit in every market.
