Victorian drivers caught a welcome break this week. Prices fell across every fuel type, with diesel leading the charge down, dropping 14.3c in metro areas alone. It's the fifth consecutive week that metro U91 has fallen, and with prices now sitting at 158.6c/L, relief is real and measurable.

Diesel's fall deserves a closer look. Metro diesel opened the week at 193.9c/L on Monday and slid almost without pause to 180.7c/L by Sunday, a drop of 13.2c across just seven days. Rural diesel followed the same path, falling from 199.0c/L to 186.7c/L. If you drive a diesel vehicle and you filled up late in the week, you timed it well.

Metro U91 showed a similarly clean downward trend, easing from 161.5c/L on Monday to 155.9c/L by Sunday. There was a brief plateau on Thursday and Friday at 158.0c/L, but the slide resumed over the weekend.

P95 had a small mid-week wobble, ticking up from 173.9c/L on Wednesday to 174.2c/L on Thursday before resuming its fall to 171.6c/L by Sunday. Same story with P98, which dipped to 182.8c/L on Wednesday, nudged up to 183.0c/L Thursday, then closed at 180.7c/L.

E10 remains the cheapest option available at 157.0c/L metro, even slightly undercutting U91. If your car is compatible, it's the simplest way to shave money off every tank.

Brand averages tell a similar story. Among metro U91 stations, Costco averaged 145.3c/L across its 3 locations, while Apco came in at 151.6c/L and Metro Petroleum at 152.4c/L. At the other end, Caltex averaged 170.4c/L and EG Ampol 161.9c/L. That's a difference of more than 25c/L between the cheapest and priciest brands, which is over $15 on a 60-litre tank.

One thing worth keeping an eye on: diesel availability has tightened a touch this week, with 46 stations reporting no diesel stock, up from 42 last week. It's not a crisis, but if your regular station has been dry lately, it's worth checking alternatives before you're running on fumes.

The next couple of days look encouraging for metro drivers. The forecast has metro U91 at 153.9c/L on Monday and 153.1c/L on Tuesday, both well below the current weekly average of 158.6c/L. Wednesday, however, is flagged as a potential reversal, with a projected rise to 177.8c/L, though confidence sits at 65%. If you can fill up Monday or Tuesday, do it.

How to Save on Fuel in VIC Right Now

Five straight weeks of falling prices is genuinely good news, and the data suggests a little more runway before the next cycle turns. Metro U91 at 158.6c/L is well inside the 30-day range, which has swung between 131.9c/L and 499.9c/L, so prices could move sharply in either direction.

The practical advice: fill up Monday or Tuesday if you can, choose E10 at 157.0c/L if your car takes it, and don't assume every station on your route is equally priced. A quick check before you leave can save you real money.
