South Australia is the cheapest state in the country for petrol right now, and prices are still heading in the right direction. Metro U91 sits at 177.6 c/L this week, down 1.4c from last week, and 4.4c below the national metro average of 182 c/L. If you're filling up in Adelaide, you're already getting a better deal than drivers in every other state.

Diesel and E10 Lead the Falls in SA This Week

The standout mover is diesel, which dropped 8.9c in metro areas and a massive 12.5c in rural SA. That's a significant relief for tradies, truckies, and anyone hauling gear across the regions. Looking at the daily data, metro diesel started the week at 234 c/L on Monday and fell steadily every day, landing at 226.1 c/L by Saturday — a clean, consistent decline with no interruptions.

E10 also had a decent run. Metro E10 dropped from 172.8 c/L on Monday to a low of 167.9 c/L on Friday, before nudging back up slightly to 169.4 c/L over the weekend. It's the most affordable fuel on the board at 170 c/L weekly average — though with only 31 metro stations stocking it, you'll want to check availability before making a special trip.

U91 had a slightly choppier week. Metro prices dipped steadily through to Thursday, then jumped to 182.4 c/L on Saturday before pulling back to 179.7 c/L on Sunday. That mid-week dip and weekend spike is a pattern worth watching.

What SA Drivers Can Save by Choosing the Right Station

The spread between the cheapest and most expensive metro stations is extraordinary this week. The lowest-priced metro station is Costco Kilburn at 166.7 c/L, while the most expensive is Independent Marina Fuel at 264.9 c/L. That's nearly 98 cents per litre between the two — on a 60-litre tank, you'd be paying almost $59 more at the pricier end.

Brand averages for metro U91 tell a similar story. U-Go averages 169.5 c/L across five stations, while BP averages 182.3 c/L and Independents average 189.4 c/L. Choosing your brand consciously rather than just pulling in to the nearest servo could easily save you 10 to 20 cents a litre.

When Was the Cheapest Day to Fill Up Last Week?

Last Thursday (15 May) was the cheapest day to fill up, with metro U91 touching 174.7 c/L. If you held off until the weekend, you paid a few cents more. That Thursday sweet spot is a recurring theme worth keeping in mind.

SA Metro Petrol Price Forecast: Next Three Days

The short-term outlook is mildly encouraging. Metro U91 is forecast to ease from the current 177.6 c/L to 176.3 c/L on Sunday, 175.4 c/L on Monday, and 174.5 c/L by Tuesday, though confidence drops to 65% by that third day. These forecasts apply to metro SA only, and the trend suggests modest further softening is likely.

A note on supply: the number of stations currently out of stock across SA has risen to 139 fuel-product combinations, up from 119 last week. P95 and P98 have seen the sharpest jumps, with P95 outages nearly doubling from 7 to 12 stations and P98 rising from 11 to 19 stations. If you run premium unleaded, it's worth confirming your usual station has stock before you head out.

How to Save on Fuel in SA This Week

With metro U91 sitting near the lower end of its 30-day range (the low is 166.7 c/L, the high 264.9 c/L), conditions are reasonably favourable right now. If your car accepts E10, it's the cheapest option on the board. If you need diesel, this week's big price drop means now is a decent time to top up. And wherever possible, compare stations before you commit — the difference in SA this week is genuinely stark.
