Australia fuel prices surge across the board this week

Every fuel type tracked nationally moved higher this week, and none of them moved gently. The national metro average for U91 climbed 6.8 cents to 168.5 c/L, but the sharpest single jump belonged to P95 and P98, both up 7.1 cents in metro areas. If you filled up last Sunday and haven't been back since, you're walking into a notably more expensive forecourt this week.

Australia fuel prices by fuel type — what moved and by how much

U91 is the bread-and-butter fuel for most Australian drivers, and a 6.8-cent metro jump in a single week is a sting worth paying attention to. Rural drivers copped a 4.2-cent rise, leaving country motorists paying 180.9 c/L on average — more than 12 cents above their city counterparts.

E10 remains the cheapest option at the national level, with metro prices averaging 165.5 c/L after a 6.9-cent rise. Remarkably, the rural average for E10 sits at just 166.3 c/L — barely a cent above metro, making it the most geographically equitable fuel on the list this week.

Diesel climbed 5.2 cents in metro areas to 188.8 c/L. Rural diesel now averages 200.6 c/L after a matching 4.2-cent rise. Truckies and tradies operating outside the major cities are absorbing a substantial premium, and it's been that way for weeks.

Premium fuels copped the hardest single-week increases. P95 rose 7.1 cents to a metro average of 185.4 c/L, and P98 matched that 7.1-cent metro climb to land at 193.7 c/L. Rural drivers on P98 are now paying 200.2 c/L — above the two-dollar mark.

South Australia takes the crown as the cheapest state for petrol this week, with a metro U91 average of just 163.4 c/L — a relatively modest 5.2-cent rise that kept SA well clear of the national average. SA's E10 metro price of 156.9 c/L is the standout bargain nationally.

The ACT is the most expensive market, with metro U91 at 177.7 c/L after an 8.1-cent jump. ACT drivers on P98 are paying 203.7 c/L, and E10 metro hit 175.8 c/L — a bruising 8.4-cent weekly rise. Canberra motorists had a rough week.

Victoria recorded the steepest metro U91 rise of the mainland states at 8.0 cents, landing at 168.3 c/L. Queensland wasn't far behind with a 7.8-cent metro surge to 169.0 c/L. WA held up better than most, with its 5.4-cent metro U91 rise keeping prices at 167.0 c/L — and WA rural diesel, while elevated at 216.0 c/L, only moved 1.6 cents from last week.

On the supply side, diesel availability improved meaningfully — 69 stations are currently flagged as out-of-stock, down from 86 last week. That's a positive sign for tradies and freight operators who've been navigating tighter supply. LPG availability tightened a little, with 114 stations out of stock versus 108 last week, so drivers running gas should check ahead.

What this means for Australian drivers this week

Metro drivers should seriously consider E10 if their vehicle supports it — at 165.5 c/L nationally, the saving over U91 is real and the rural penalty is unusually small this week. If you're ACT-based, it's worth crossing into NSW for a fill if your route allows. SA drivers are sitting pretty relative to the rest of the country, so top up while prices hold.
