Diesel prices across Australia took their biggest tumble in months this week, dropping 12.7c/L in metro areas and 12.2c/L in rural areas — easily the sharpest move of any fuel type for the week of 22 to 29 June 2026. Every fuel on the board fell, and drivers in most capital cities will be feeling the relief.

Diesel is the standout story this week. Metro averages fell to 181.9c/L and rural areas tracked close behind at 198.5c/L. For tradies, freight operators and anyone driving a diesel vehicle, that's a meaningful saving that compounds quickly over a full tank.

U91 dropped a solid 6.0c in metro areas to land at 157.3c/L, with rural drivers still paying a notable 17.7c/L premium at 175.0c/L. That urban-to-rural gap is a persistent feature of the Australian market and shows little sign of narrowing.

P95 fell 6.3c in the city to 173.6c/L, offering mid-grade buyers a reasonable week. Rural P95 at 185.2c/L is down 6.0c, keeping the gap between metro and country consistent with recent trends.

E10 remains the cheapest option on the national average at 155.2c/L metro, down 5.6c. The rural average of 159.2c/L is unusually close to the metro figure, which makes E10 one of the more equitable fuels for country drivers right now.

P98 held close to diesel on price, averaging 182.0c/L in metro areas after dropping 6.1c. Rural P98 at 193.3c/L is down 5.7c, a reasonable fall but still a steep premium for premium fuel outside the cities.

State-by-State Comparison: Cheapest State for Petrol in Australia

South Australia is the clear winner this week, with metro U91 averaging just 150.3c/L — the cheapest in the country and 6.3c lower than last week. SA drivers also benefit from some of the lowest P98 and diesel metro averages nationally.

Western Australia comes in second at 154.3c/L for metro U91, with a strong 6.9c weekly drop. NSW sits at 155.1c/L, followed by VIC at 158.6c/L and QLD at 158.8c/L. The ACT continues to be the most expensive market at 166.8c/L for metro U91, having shed only 4.1c compared to heavier falls elsewhere.

WA rural drivers face the steepest regional penalty of any state, with U91 at 190.5c/L — a 36.2c gap above the WA metro average that reflects the realities of long supply chains in the west.

On the supply side, there are currently 480 station-fuels flagged as out-of-stock nationally, up from 460 last week. Diesel availability is tightening, with 89 stations currently without stock compared to 85 last week. Victoria accounts for the largest share of outages nationally, with 232 affected, followed by Queensland at 141. If you're in one of those states and planning a longer run, it's worth checking live stock status before you leave.

What This Week's Prices Mean for Drivers

This is a good week to fill up, particularly if you run diesel or a petrol vehicle that accepts E10. The broad fall across all fuel types suggests downward wholesale pressure that may not last, so topping up sooner rather than later is a sensible call. If you're flexible on which station you use, SA and WA metro areas offer the best value on U91 right now. ACT drivers should compare nearby options carefully given the premium the territory consistently carries.
