Diesel Drives a National Price Retreat Across Australia Fuel Prices

It was a good week to fill up. Diesel prices across Australia tumbled nearly 9 cents per litre in metro areas, leading what was a broad, welcome retreat across almost every fuel type for the week of 15 to 22 June 2026. The one exception was LPG, which bucked the trend and crept higher in both metro and rural locations.

Diesel was clearly the standout mover this week. Metro averages dropped 8.9 cents to 194.7 c/L, with rural prices following a similar path down 7.8 cents to 210.7 c/L. Truck drivers and tradespeople will notice it, and it's a meaningful shift for anyone running a diesel vehicle regularly.

Unleaded U91 eased 3.5 cents in the city to 163.4 c/L, with rural drivers seeing an almost identical drop of 3.4 cents to 180.6 c/L. The metro-to-rural gap of 17.2 cents remains a persistent reality for regional motorists.

Premium unleaded P95 fell 3.4 cents metro to 179.9 c/L, and 3.1 cents rurally to 191.3 c/L. P98 moved in lockstep, dropping 3.5 cents metro to 188.2 c/L and 3.6 cents rurally to 199.1 c/L. Both premium grades are tracking in a reassuringly consistent direction.

E10 continues to be the cheapest mainstream unleaded option nationally at 160.8 c/L metro, down 3.5 cents on the week. Rural E10 also nudged lower by 3.6 cents to 164.7 c/L, making the metro-rural gap unusually tight at just 3.9 cents.

LPG is the week's outlier. It rose 3.6 cents metro to 103.3 c/L and 2.1 cents rurally to 109.6 c/L. Still the cheapest fuel type by a large margin, but the upward tick is worth watching if you're an LPG driver.

Cheapest State for Petrol — and the Most Expensive

South Australia takes the crown as the cheapest state for petrol this week, with metro U91 sitting at just 156.7 c/L, a full 14.2 cents below the ACT, which remains the most expensive capital at 170.9 c/L. SA also posted the most modest metro U91 drop of the week at 2.1 cents, suggesting it was already running lean on price heading into the period.

Victoria recorded the steepest U91 metro fall at 4.5 cents, landing at 164.7 c/L. The ACT's diesel story is striking too — metro diesel there dropped 10.6 cents, the sharpest state-level diesel movement in the country. Western Australia's rural diesel is a sobering reminder of regional cost pressures, sitting at 227.0 c/L, nearly 40 cents above the WA metro average of 187.0 c/L.

On the supply side, total out-of-stock station-fuel counts edged down from 472 to 460 nationally. LPG availability improved the most, with 6 fewer stations reporting stock issues. Diesel outages held steady at 85 stations, so if you're planning a long run this week, it's worth checking the app before you leave.

What This Week's Australia Fuel Prices Mean for Drivers

If you drive diesel or were waiting for a better week to fill a large tank, this is it. The 8.9 cent metro drop is the kind of movement that adds up fast if you're topping up 60 or 80 litres. For unleaded drivers, the savings are more modest but still real. E10 remains the value play in metro areas, and SA drivers are sitting pretty compared to the rest of the country.
