Australia Fuel Prices – Week of 8 June 2026

Prices fell at every fuel grade across the country this week, with diesel leading the charge down. The national metro diesel average dropped 6.4 cents to 203.6c/L — the sharpest single-week fall of any grade — while U91 and the premium fuels weren't far behind. If you've been waiting for relief, this is the best week in a while to fill up.

Fuel-by-Fuel Breakdown

U91 shed 5.2 cents in metro areas this week, settling at 166.8c/L nationally. Rural drivers also caught a break, though the gap between metro and rural remains a frustrating 17.2 cents.

E10 is the cheapest grade on the national average, sitting at 164.3c/L metro — down 5.5 cents, the second-largest metro fall of the week. Rural E10 averaged 168.3c/L, making the metro-to-rural spread a relatively tight 4 cents compared to other grades. Worth keeping in mind if your car is E10-compatible.

Diesel had the biggest week of all, dropping 6.4 cents metro and 6.2 cents rural. At 203.6c/L metro and 218.5c/L rural, prices are still elevated, but tradies and freight operators will welcome any movement in this direction.

P95 fell 5.1 cents to 183.4c/L metro and 4.0 cents to 194.4c/L rural. The rural premium on P95 sits at just over 11 cents, which is one of the tighter spreads across the premium grades.

P98 also dropped 5.1 cents in metro areas to 191.7c/L. Rural P98 averaged 202.7c/L after a 4.1-cent fall. The metro-to-rural gap here is over 11 cents — premium fuel in the bush continues to carry a meaningful surcharge.

Cheapest State for Petrol: State-by-State Comparison

South Australia is the cheapest state for petrol this week, with metro U91 averaging just 158.8c/L — a full 7.8 cents below the national metro average. SA also offers E10 at 154.0c/L metro, the lowest unleaded price of any state or grade this week.

New South Wales and Victoria both recorded the biggest drops, with metro U91 falling 7.1 cents and 7.3 cents respectively. VIC metro diesel was the standout mover at 8.1 cents down, though at 210.4c/L it remains one of the pricier diesel markets in the country.

Western Australia's rural prices tell a different story. Rural U91 averaged 198.4c/L — the only state where rural unleaded sits above the 198-cent mark — and rural diesel hit 233.1c/L, the highest rural diesel figure nationally by some margin.

The ACT remains the most expensive state for petrol, with metro U91 at 174.6c/L. ACT diesel at 213.8c/L is also the second-highest metro diesel price behind Victoria.

On the supply front, premium diesel (PDiesel) station outages jumped from 15 to 23 nationally this week, the sharpest percentage rise of any fuel type. VIC, QLD and SA account for the bulk of the 472 station-fuel outages recorded across the country. It's not a crisis, but if you rely on premium diesel, checking availability before you head out is a smart habit right now.

What This Means for Drivers

Fill up this week if you can. A broad fall across every grade — especially diesel and E10 — means conditions are more favourable than they've been in recent weeks. If your vehicle runs on E10, the 164.3c/L national metro average makes it the standout value option. Drivers in SA have the most to celebrate, while those in the ACT and rural WA continue to pay the highest prices in the country.
