Australia Fuel Prices Tumble Across the Board

It's been a strong week for drivers nationally. Diesel metro prices fell a hefty 13.6 cents per litre compared to last week, making it the biggest single mover of the period. Every major fuel type dropped in metro areas, and while rural prices also eased, the relief wasn't quite as deep — a familiar pattern that continues to frustrate regional drivers.

U91 eased 8.8 cents in metro areas to sit at 172.0 c/L nationally, while rural drivers saw a more modest 2.7 cent drop to 187.6 c/L. The metro-rural gap remains wide at nearly 16 cents.

Diesel had the most dramatic week of any fuel type. Metro prices shed 13.6 cents to reach 210.1 c/L, and rural diesel dropped 7.0 cents to 224.8 c/L. Truck operators and tradies running diesel vehicles will welcome the reprieve, even if metro areas caught the bigger break.

P95 tracked closely with P98 this week, both dropping around 8.9 cents in metro areas. P95 sits at 188.5 c/L metro and 198.5 c/L rural, while P98 lands at 196.9 c/L and 206.8 c/L respectively.

E10 remains the most affordable unleaded option nationally, down 8.4 cents to 169.9 c/L in metro areas and 172.7 c/L in rural zones — a spread of just 2.8 cents, unusually tight compared to other fuels.

LPG bucked the trend entirely. Metro LPG crept up 0.3 cents to 152.4 c/L, and rural LPG rose 3.4 cents to 189.9 c/L. It remains the cheapest fuel per litre in metro areas by a wide margin, though the rural premium is stark.

Cheapest State for Petrol in Australia This Week

South Australia is the place to be for cheap U91 this week. Metro SA averaged just 163.2 c/L, down 10 cents from last week and sitting well clear of every other state. WA came second at 167.9 c/L, followed by NSW at 171.4 c/L.

The ACT continues to be the most expensive capital for U91 at 179.0 c/L, though its fall was limited to 4.9 cents — the smallest metro drop of any state. NSW delivered the largest single-state metro cut, with U91 falling 11.4 cents.

Western Australia tells a different story in rural areas. Rural WA U91 rose 8.4 cents to 199.7 c/L, and rural WA diesel climbed 5.7 cents to 237.4 c/L — the only state where rural prices moved significantly upward. Drivers outside Perth should factor that in before heading off on a long run.

ACT diesel recorded a remarkable drop of 22.3 cents to 221.1 c/L, the sharpest single movement of any fuel in any state this week.

On the supply side, it's worth keeping an eye on stock levels. P98 availability tightened noticeably, with 64 stations currently out of stock nationally, up from 55 last week. U91 outages also rose from 55 to 63. VIC, QLD and SA account for the bulk of affected stations. If you're running P98 regularly, checking availability before you fill up is a smart move this week.

What Australia's Fuel Price Drop Means for Drivers

Metro drivers across most states are in a genuinely good position right now. If you're flexible on fuel grade, E10 at 169.9 c/L is the best value unleaded going. Diesel users should fill up while prices are low — big drops like this week's 13.6 cent fall don't always last. Rural drivers should take note of the smaller savings on offer and plan fill-ups accordingly, particularly in WA where rural prices moved against the national trend.
