Australia Fuel Prices – Week of 25 May 2026

Diesel is leading the charge downward this week, shedding 7.2 cents per litre at the metro level and making it the biggest national mover in the 25 May to 1 June 2026 period. Every fuel type tracked nationally is cheaper than last week, which is rare enough to be worth celebrating.

Australia Fuel Prices Snapshot: Metro vs Rural

Rural drivers are still paying a meaningful premium — up to 9.5 cents more per litre on U91 compared to metro — but the gap is narrowing slightly as rural prices follow metro downward.

Fuel-by-Fuel Breakdown

Diesel delivered the sharpest relief of the week, dropping 7.2 cents in metro areas and 5.0 cents in rural zones. At 223.8c/L metro and 232.0c/L rural, it remains the priciest fuel on the forecourt, but tradies and freight operators will take what they can get.

E10 recorded the second-largest metro fall, down 4.9 cents to 180.8c/L. Notably, rural E10 is now just a fraction cheaper than metro E10 — 180.7c/L versus 180.8c/L — making it virtually the same price nationwide, which almost never happens.

P98 fell 4.2 cents in metro areas to sit at 202.4c/L. Rural P98 remains a full 10 cents above that at 212.5c/L, so premium drivers outside the city are still copping a significant location penalty.

P95 dropped 3.0 cents metro to 197.5c/L. Rural P95 sits at 203.8c/L after a 1.5 cent fall — a more modest improvement but still movement in the right direction.

Regular U91 eased 2.9 cents metro to 180.9c/L. It's the smallest metro fall of the week but still a positive outcome for the majority of everyday drivers.

Cheapest State for Petrol and State-by-State Australia Fuel Prices

South Australia is the cheapest state for petrol this week by a clear margin, with metro U91 averaging just 173.3c/L after a 3.5 cent fall. SA drivers are paying more than 11 cents less per litre than their counterparts in Victoria, which sits at the other end of the ladder at 184.6c/L metro.

Western Australia comes in second at 177.1c/L, benefiting from a strong 4.2 cent drop. New South Wales fell the most in absolute terms, down 4.7 cents to 182.9c/L, while the ACT barely budged — just 0.4 cents lower at 183.9c/L. Queensland sits at 183.8c/L after a 2.0 cent fall.

One number that stands out is the ACT's diesel price: 243.5c/L metro, which is nearly 20 cents above the national metro average. That's a significant outlier, and ACT drivers running diesel should plan accordingly.

On the supply side, LPG availability tightened this week with 126 stations out of stock nationally, up from 118 last week. Victoria, SA and Queensland account for the bulk of out-of-stock pumps across all fuel types, so if you're in those states it's worth checking availability before you head out.

What This Week's Australia Fuel Prices Mean for Drivers

Fill up sooner rather than later. Broad falls across every fuel type suggest wholesale prices are easing, but cycles can turn quickly. If you're on diesel, this week's 7.2 cent metro drop is meaningful savings on a full tank. E10 is now essentially the same price in the city and the country, so rural drivers have a genuine opportunity to lock in the cheaper fuel while it lasts. SA and WA metro drivers are in the best position nationally right now.
