Diesel is the big story this week, falling hard at metro and rural stations alike while unleaded grades push higher in the cities. It's a split market that rewards flexibility — if you can choose your fuel type, timing, and state, there's real money to be saved.

Diesel Prices Australia: The Week's Biggest Mover

Diesel is down 6.2 cents in metro areas and a substantial 8.8 cents in rural zones, making it the standout story of the week. That rural drop is significant — country drivers, tradies, and freight operators have been copping elevated diesel costs for months, so any sustained relief there genuinely matters. Metro diesel at 244.8 c/L is still painfully expensive in absolute terms, but the direction is welcome.

E10 and P98 Surge in the Cities

Metro E10 jumped 4.4 cents to 172.8 c/L, which undercuts every other petrol grade and still holds its value as the cheapest option for compatible vehicles. Rural E10 barely moved, slipping just 0.1 cents to 180.2 c/L. P98 climbed 4.2 cents in metro areas to 204.2 c/L — premium fuel users in the cities are feeling that rise this week.

LPG crept up 3.3 cents in metro areas to 151.1 c/L, though it remains comfortably the cheapest fuel type available to those with compatible vehicles. Rural LPG barely shifted, adding just 0.2 cents.

Cheapest State for Petrol: SA Leads the Nation

South Australia takes the national cheapest state for petrol crown this week at 179.0 c/L for metro U91, up 3.8 cents but still the lowest in the country. WA sits close behind at 180.5 c/L, followed by Queensland at 181.1 c/L. NSW and Victoria are tied at 182.3 c/L, while the ACT is the most expensive at 182.6 c/L — though that gap is fairly thin across the board.

On diesel, WA is the standout performer with metro diesel at 235.6 c/L, well below the national metro average and the lowest of any state. The ACT punishes diesel drivers most heavily at 263.0 c/L metro — nearly 27 cents above WA. SA rural diesel dropped a sharp 9.5 cents this week, and WA rural followed closely with a 9.9 cent fall.

Supply Conditions

Overall out-of-stock fuel slots fell from 461 to 437 this week, which is a modest improvement. P98 recorded the sharpest drop in outages, falling from 76 to 60 affected stations nationally. P95 also improved, down from 64 to 52. LPG is moving the other way though, rising from 109 to 117 stations out of stock — worth keeping in mind if LPG is your regular fuel and you're planning a longer run. Victoria leads all states for total supply gaps at 202 station-fuels, ahead of SA on 119 and Queensland on 116.

What This Means for Drivers

Diesel users should take advantage of the current dip, particularly in rural areas where the fall has been steepest. Metro drivers on P98 or E10 are facing a short-term price spike, and if your car runs on E10 it's worth locking in a fill now before any further creep. LPG drivers in metro areas should check availability before heading out, given the uptick in outages. South Australian and WA drivers are best positioned nationally for petrol this week.
