Australia Fuel Prices – Week of 27 April 2026

Diesel has had its biggest single-week fall in months, tumbling 18.8c/L across metro Australia and 20.5c/L in rural areas. Every fuel type is cheaper this week than last, and drivers who fill up now are catching prices at levels not seen for some time.

U91 dropped 8.4c in metro areas and 8.5c rurally, bringing the national metro average to 180.7c/L. Rural drivers are still paying a 14.5c premium over their city counterparts, a gap that has barely shifted week on week.

Diesel is the standout story of the week. Metro prices fell 18.8c to 251.1c/L while rural stations dropped an even steeper 20.5c to 263.9c/L. Truckies and tradies who've been grinding through elevated diesel costs will welcome the relief, though prices remain well above petrol grades.

E10 is the cheapest option on the national average at 177.5c/L metro, down 8.9c for the week. Rural E10 sits at 181.6c/L after an 8.8c fall. Drivers whose vehicles are E10-compatible have the clearest win this week.

P95 fell 8.5c metro to 196.6c/L and 7.8c rurally to 207.1c/L. The city-to-country gap for premium unleaded sits at just over 10c, fairly consistent with recent weeks.

P98 eased 8.5c in metro areas to 205.5c/L and 8.4c rurally to 216.1c/L. The spread between P98 and U91 in metro areas remains around 25c, so drivers who don't need premium should think carefully before paying the extra.

Cheapest State for Petrol and State-by-State Comparison

South Australia takes the title of cheapest state for petrol this week, with metro U91 averaging just 175.1c/L, a full 8.5c below the national metro average. SA also leads on diesel at 243.1c/L metro and P98 at 199.9c/L metro, where it's the only state dipping under 200c for that grade.

Western Australia comes in second at 179.9c/L for metro U91, though WA recorded the smallest weekly fall at 6.2c, suggesting its pricing cycle is at a different point to the east coast.

Victoria had the sharpest drop among the larger states, with metro U91 falling 11.4c to 182.3c/L and metro diesel plunging 25c to 256.8c/L. That diesel fall is the biggest of any state this week by a considerable margin.

The ACT is the most expensive market for metro U91 at 183.6c/L, though its 9.6c weekly fall is solid and its diesel price of 266.7c/L only fell 8.7c, the most modest diesel movement nationally.

Queensland and NSW sit in the middle of the pack at 181.5c/L and 182c/L respectively for metro U91, with broadly similar weekly falls of around 8c.

On supply, diesel availability has tightened slightly, with 79 stations nationally flagged as out of stock, up from 69 last week. Victoria, SA and Queensland account for the bulk of those gaps. If you're a diesel driver, it's worth checking live availability before heading to an unfamiliar station. PDiesel is also up from 18 to 22 stations out of stock nationally.

What This Means for Drivers

Fill up now if you can. Prices are falling across the board and this kind of broad weekly decline doesn't always last. E10-compatible vehicles have the best deal in metro areas, while diesel drivers who've been holding off should move before any potential bounce. Rural drivers saw the biggest diesel savings this week, so regional motorists in particular should lock in current prices.
