Prices have fallen hard right across the country this week, and diesel is leading the charge down with a national metro drop of 34 cents per litre — the biggest single-week move of any fuel type in the data.

U91 sits at a national metro average of 189.3c/L this week, down 20.6 cents from last week. Rural drivers are still paying a meaningful premium at 203.8c/L, though they clawed back 17.4 cents too. That 14.5-cent metro-to-rural gap is a reminder that location still costs money at the forecourt.

Diesel is the week's standout mover. Metro prices dropped a full 34 cents to 270.1c/L, while rural diesel came down 29.8 cents to 284.6c/L. Truck operators, tradespeople and caravan tourers will feel that relief immediately. It's still a long way from comfortable territory, but a 34-cent weekly fall is not something you see every month.

E10 edged out all other grades as the cheapest metro option nationally, averaging 186.5c/L after a 21.3-cent fall. Rural E10 at 190.5c/L is now almost on par with metro, which makes it the best-value choice for drivers whose vehicles are E10-compatible.

P95 fell 20.8 cents metro to 205.1c/L. The rural average of 215.0c/L means regional drivers are paying almost ten cents more for mid-grade, which is a gap worth factoring in on longer trips.

P98 dropped 20.6 cents to a national metro average of 214.1c/L. Rural P98 sits at 224.6c/L, reflecting the familiar premium outside capital cities. The spread between U91 and P98 metro is 24.8 cents — reasonable for drivers whose engines genuinely benefit from premium fuel.

Cheapest State for Petrol and State-by-State Comparison

South Australia is the clear winner this week. Metro U91 in SA averaged just 182.5c/L after a 25.2-cent fall — the steepest state-level drop of any major market. SA's metro diesel also recorded the biggest fall nationally, down 39.7 cents to 264.8c/L. Adelaide drivers had a genuinely good week.

Western Australia came in second at 186.2c/L for metro U91, with NSW and Queensland both sitting at 189.9c/L. The ACT and Victoria are the priciest markets this week — Victoria's metro average of 193.8c/L makes it the most expensive state for U91, though prices did fall 20.3 cents there too. The gap between SA and VIC is now 11.3 cents per litre for metro U91, which adds up quickly on a full tank.

On supply, diesel availability improved noticeably with 69 stations currently out of stock nationally, down from 87 last week. LPG moved the other direction, with 109 stations running dry compared to 105 the week prior. Victoria, SA and Queensland account for the bulk of out-of-stock reports across all fuel types.

What Australia Fuel Prices Mean for Drivers This Week

If you're a diesel user, this is a genuine opportunity to fill up. A 34-cent fall is significant and prices could recover as quickly as they fell. For petrol drivers, E10 at 186.5c/L metro is the best value on offer right now if your car supports it. Wherever you are, South Australia is worth a detour if you're near the border — the price difference is real.
