Australia Fuel Prices Drop Over 12 Cents Across the Board

Australian drivers got a welcome reprieve this week, with metro U91 tumbling 12.4 cents to an average of 210.0 c/L nationally. Every major fuel type recorded double-digit falls in metro areas, making this one of the more significant single-week drops of the year so far. Rural drivers shared in the relief too, though the cuts were slightly smaller across the board.

Metro U91 shed 12.4 cents to sit at 210.0 c/L, while rural areas came in at 221.2 c/L after an 11.4-cent fall. That metro-to-rural gap of 11.2 cents is fairly typical, but it underlines that regional drivers continue to pay a meaningful premium just for their geography.

E10 was the cheapest option on the national average, dropping 12.1 cents in metro areas to 207.9 c/L. Rural E10 closed the gap to just 2.1 cents behind metro, landing at 210.0 c/L — one of the tighter metro-rural spreads among all fuel types this week.

P95 fell 12.2 cents in metro markets to 226.1 c/L, with rural not far behind at 233.1 c/L after an 11.3-cent drop. Drivers who regularly choose mid-grade over standard unleaded will feel this week's savings almost as keenly as U91 users.

Premium P98 led the pack in raw cents saved, shedding 12.6 cents metro-wide to reach 234.8 c/L. Rural P98 dropped 11.4 cents to 242.7 c/L. That rural-metro gap of nearly 8 cents is worth keeping in mind for country drivers debating whether premium is worth the extra cost.

Diesel prices fell 11.6 cents in metro areas to 307.6 c/L, though rural diesel only dropped 8.4 cents to 315.0 c/L. The slower rural diesel fall is the one slight dampener in an otherwise broad-based week of cuts, and it matters given how many regional businesses and tradespeople rely on it.

Cheapest State for Petrol – State-by-State Comparison

Western Australia is this week's clear winner for drivers chasing the cheapest state for petrol, with metro U91 sitting at just 204.4 c/L after a massive 16-cent fall. WA's diesel figure is even more striking — metro diesel at 299.5 c/L is the only state average sitting below 300 cents, and it fell 16.4 cents in a single week.

South Australia came in second at 207.9 c/L for metro U91, though SA's rural prices told a different story — rural U91 averaged 225.0 c/L, one of the higher rural figures nationally. NSW and QLD landed almost identically at 210.5 c/L and 210.6 c/L respectively, while the ACT sat at 212.5 c/L. Victoria recorded the highest metro U91 average at 214.2 c/L, meaning Melbourne drivers paid roughly 10 cents more per litre than their Perth counterparts this week.

On the supply front, 469 station-fuel combinations were flagged as out of stock nationally this week, up from none last week. That's a notable jump. LPG was the most affected fuel type with 105 stations dry, followed by diesel at 87 stations out. Victoria, South Australia and Queensland were the worst affected states. If you rely on LPG or diesel, it's worth checking availability before you head out — this looks like a supply lag rather than anything structural, but it's real enough to cause inconvenience.

Fill up now. Prices this week sit at levels not seen in a while and, given Australia's well-known price cycle behaviour in major cities, a recovery toward higher prices is likely within the next week or two. E10 remains the best value option for compatible vehicles nationally at 207.9 c/L metro. WA and SA drivers are in the best position of all the states right now, so local drivers there should take full advantage while the cycle is at its floor.
