Australia Fuel Prices: The Big Picture for 6โ13 April 2026
Diesel has blown out sharply across every state this week, with South Australia copping the harshest hit โ a metro rise of 16.4 cents per litre in a single week. Meanwhile, petrol grades and LPG moved in the opposite direction, giving everyday drivers some relief at the checkout. It's a split story, and which side of it you land on depends entirely on what you're driving.

Western Australia takes the title of cheapest state for petrol this week, with metro U91 at 220.4 cents per litre. The ACT came in close behind at 221.7 cents, while Victoria claimed the unwanted top spot at 223.9 cents โ and also recorded the steepest weekly fall of any state, down 8.6 cents metro.
South Australia deserves a mention for two very different reasons. Its metro LPG price cratered 21.9 cents in a single week to just 101.1 cents per litre โ the most dramatic fuel movement in the country this week. On the flip side, SA metro diesel rose 16.4 cents, the largest diesel increase of any state. NSW and QLD diesel also climbed around 11 to 14 cents metro, while WA's diesel increase was comparatively modest at 10.9 cents.
What This Means for Drivers
If you're filling a petrol vehicle, this week is genuinely a good time to top up โ prices are down across U91, E10, P95 and P98 nationally, and the trend is broadly downward. LPG drivers in metro areas should take full advantage of that sharp dip while it lasts, particularly in SA where the fall has been extraordinary.
If you drive a diesel vehicle, there's no sugarcoating it โ costs are up significantly this week and there's no clear indication of an immediate reversal. Comparing prices between stations and timing your fill carefully has never mattered more.
